Missed our 2026 Annual Meeting & Earth Day event? Here's our recap!
UNA-Westchester Chapter held a well-attended and very interesting Annual Meeting and Earth Day program at Manhattanville University on May 3rd, with the theme “Global Goals and Local Roots: Food Security in Westchester”. Keynote speaker, Hugh Locke, an expert on regenerative agriculture and smallholder farmers around the world, set the stage with an overview of major obstacles facing small farmers in feeding their communities and how important these farmers and regenerative agriculture will be to feeding the increased population in the world in next decade. His remarks were followed by an outstanding panel of local leaders implementing food security programs in Westchester: Rebecca Snyder, Feeding Westchester; Michelle Hughes, Glywood Center for Food and Farming; Michael Capers, Sweet Freedom Farm; and Millie Magraw, Westchester County Planning Department’s Planting Westchester program. The Panel was moderated by Ruby Olisemeka, Founder of Khalipha, and another activist providing food to needy people. Following a presentation of the annual report and announcement of the new Board of Directors, we were
pleased to confer awards on the organizations represented by the panelists, the winners of the National Model UN Conference (Mercy University) and UNA-Westchester’s Media Contest winners. The audience was very much engaged and enjoyed speaking to the cosponsors who had tables around the room and to the speakers and panelists at the networking reception. It was an inspiring and informative program. We are most grateful to our cohost, Manhattanville University’s Clark Center for Religion and Community Service, and our co-sponsors: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, Zeta Nu Omega Chapter (AKA); Environmental Leaders of Color (ELOC); Feeding Westchester; The Links, Inc., Westchester County (NY) Chapter; Planting Westchester; the Ramapough Nation; Sustainable Westchester; and Westchester Alliance for Sustainable Solutions (WASS).
