Missed our 2025 UN Day event? Watch it here!
UNA Westchester's UN Day 2025 on October 26th at the Greenburgh Public Library celebrated the 80 th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter in 1945. It was the best yet -- brilliant speakers, inspiring young panelists, dedicated humanitarians as honorees, fabulous singers and dancers and a totally engaged audience. The theme, "Restoring Justice, Saving Lives" was addressed by our international experts who explored the reintegration of child soldiers into society, and our local youth panel described what their programs are doing to restore justice in the lives of young people.
The international speakers, Ms. Hawa Taylor-Kamara Diallo and Mr. Michael Kingsley- Nyinah, both served the United Nations as senior staff as well as peacekeepers. They have first-hand knowledge of the issue of child soldiers in a post-conflict situation. The youth panel, moderated by Board Member Nicole Benjamin, featured an Opportunity Youth Part graduate from New Rochelle, Brandon Scott, and participants in the White Plains Youth Court, Rhea Narayanan and Leo Kennedy. They were brilliant and provide a light on what our young people are capable of. The room was packed with interested participants who enjoyed the reception and information tables.
We were thrilled to have our local leaders join the event -- U.S. Rep. George Latimer, State Senators Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Shelley Mayer, County Executive Ken Jenkins, Assemblywoman MaryJane Shimsky, Legislator Shanae Williams, Town of Greenburgh Trustee Ellen P. Hendrickx, and others. They brought certificates and proclamations for the speakers, honorees and young panelists. UNA-Westchester received a magnificent proclamation from our State Senators. I will share a few of the photos to give you an idea of this exciting event. Photos courtesy of Michael Thompson, L2 Web Media Group.
