Trip to the UN – Reflections by Julianne Wang and Harshita Shet
UNA-Westchester President Marcia Brewster and Vice President Demetrios Mihailidis (known as Mr. M) treated two of our superstars from among UNA-Westchester Youth members to a trip to the UN on August 19th. The two young women, Harshita Shet and Julianne Wang, have participated in our Young Professionals program and have contributed in many ways to UNA-Westchester’s work. Joining the group was Anthony Mihailidis, a graduate of UNIS and a current student at Hofstra University.
Reflections from Julianne:
The guided tour was a great experience. It took us right to the place where international leaders from all over the world often convene; in fact, many leaders were working there that day, reflecting a professional atmosphere. It was very exciting to see meetings in session and the behind-the-scenes of the UN at work.
The trip was informative and enjoyable. It immersed us into the international world; seeing the great gifts from countries in different parts of the world was spectacular. There were many sights to see and pictures to take. The headquarters is rich with culture, artifacts, architecture, and art from around the globe, which exhibits its powerful mission to better the world.
The United Nations is a truly inspiring place for those who want to pursue careers in global relations; visiting it makes visitors feel more connected to the purpose and future endeavors of the UN community. Through my internship and hard work with CEDAW, I am honored to have been given the opportunity for the visit at the headquarters by UNA-USA. Not only did I leave with knowledge, I left feeling inspired.”
Reflections from Harshita:
The trip to the UN was a great opportunity for me. I always admire how UNA-Westchester Board members make time and try to support young students like us. I have been part of the UNA for the past six years and have seen how young students are supported and given the opportunity to be young leaders.
I enjoyed the tour of the UN, I felt how the UN connects countries and provides support to make countries strong. The UN headquarters is an amazing building. You read about the UN, but being there was a major difference. It is amazing to see the people working and their involvement in making peace in the world. I was able to see assembly rooms and several beautiful pictures, which clearly explain the meaning to everyone who views them.
I felt how this building represents peace and is a symbol of hope. Millions of people meet here to discuss issues of peace, social justice, economic issues, and overall social well-being. I was very happy to learn so many things about the UN’s involvement in making peace in the world. The artwork and the gifts from other countries showed how every person has to be part of this journey.
I had so many opportunities to take pictures and I thank our leaders for getting young students involved and making them strong leaders. When I left NY City, I not only learned so many things that I was not aware of, but realized how important it is for the youth to be involved in the UN. Our voice can make a difference in bringing about world peace.
