UNA-Westchester celebrates International Women's Day in Yonkers, March 5, 2016
UNA-USA Westchester had a fabulous celebration of International Women’s Day 2016 on Saturday March 5th at the Yonkers Riverfront Library. The Theme was “Women’s Political Empowerment: Cracking the Glass Ceiling” and it featured H.E. Ms. Nguyen Phuong Nga, the Ambassador of Vietnam to the UN, State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Professor Joan Katen who teaches Peace, Justice and Sustainability studies at Pace University. Mayor Mike Spano sent us a very moving proclamation, declaring March 5th 2016 as International Women’s Day in the City of Yonkers. We had a screening of an excellent short documentary, “Madame Parliamentarian”, which told of the struggles of women in Lebanon to run for office. After hearing from our inspiring speakers, we had a lively panel discussion moderated by Cheryl Brannan, CEO of Sister-to-Sister International. Our partners for the event were AKA Sorority, Inc., Yonkers Public Library and AFS New York. The room was packed with about 120 people, including 20 AFS high school students from around the world, AKA members, UNA-Westchester Board members, local political leaders and many more. .Everyone enjoyed the reception with excellent food and networking opportunities. It was a great day for all who participated.
