Now is the Time to Join UNA Westchester!
From the UNA-USA-Westchester Chapter Membership Committee
Are you a humanitarian?
As our President, J. Yuhanna Edwards, tells us, that is the only criterion for joining the Westchester chapter of UNA-USA. If you care about the world and its people, if you believe in reaching across national borders, if you cherish the notion of a nation and a world based on justice, equity, and peace, this is an opportunity for you. If you are looking for the chance to work with other socially conscious people, to contribute your expertise, experience, and interest in areas such as social media and advocacy, to be a voice for change, and to support and protect the increasingly vital work of the United Nations, this is the organization for you.
Every year, the Westchester UNA-USA chapter hosts events on Human Rights Day, the anniversary of the United Nations, and International Women’s Day. Each year there is an Annual Meeting and Community Consultation on the Future of the United Nations at which your voice can and will be heard.
Our events are amazing—important, timely, educational, moving. This past year, the chapter held an online discussion on “Inequities in Maternal Mortality, Global and Local,” with break out sessions so all participants had a chance to share and report back to the larger group on this truly horrifying topic. Our celebration of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations was dedicated to “Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.” The international speakers were thoroughly engaging while raising critical issues of our time. Its musical tribute by 26 United Nations ambassadors singing Heal the World was a delight. Our International Women’s Day panel consisted of four powerful women--a United Nations representative, a community activist, the Mount Vernon mayor, and a television personality. Actress Millie Bobby Brown was the featured guest at our Human Rights Day event that showcased two arts groups: the Bond Street Theater, a performing company that “initiates theater-based projects for conflict resolution, education, and empowerment in critical areas worldwide,” and Rock Your World, an educational organization that uses “the power of media and the arts to ignite positive social change.”
UNA-USA is deeply committed to young people. The Westchester chapter hosts mock United Nations days, sponsors essay and media contests, and supports internships for students. Raina Kadavil, one of our Board members and co-chair of the Young Professionals Committee, started an incredible life journey as a UNA intern. She writes:
"I interned for the United Nations Association in New York when I was fourteen years old, a sophomore in high school. That was my first internship and it set me on track for the rest of my career that included an internship at the UN itself the following year, speaking at the UN several times—even before the General Assembly, and majoring in International Relations at Boston University. The internship was far from filing and busywork - I worked on lots of exciting projects like creating the "World I Want" video contest, researching and writing about sustainable energy sources in Haiti, and attending events like Member's Day at the United Nations. I learned a great deal about sustainable development and the UN's Sustainable Development Agenda while gaining practical skills in marketing and communications. The internship helped to set me apart from my peers early on and made my resume more competitive, allowing me to never have to take an unpaid internship in college. Applying for the UNA-USA internship was one of the best decisions I ever made."
Raina’s words, and her work on the Young Professionals Committee, serve as an inspiration to us all—young and old and in-between.
Once you join the Westchester chapter, you will receive information about all chapter activities. You will be able to participate in chapter committees: Education, Program, Advocacy, Social Media, Young Professionals, Community, Partnerships and Community Outreach.
Joining our chapter automatically makes you a member of UNA-USA/National through which you will have access to a Global Engagement Summit, a Global leadership summit, and youth leadership programs. Even membership in a UN Federal Credit Union. You’ll receive the national publication and the chapter newsletter. Joining provides you with a unique connection to the world’s foremost international organization and makes you part of a community of United Nations advocates. This community is particularly important now as the United States re-enters the global field in a new and cooperative manner.
