Addressing Inequalities in Maternal Outcomes
Panel Discussion addressed Global and Local Inequities in Maternal Outcomes for Women of Color, August 18,2020
Having a baby is typically one of the happiest times in a woman’s life. But for women of color in the United States and around the globe, this exciting period is often layered with fear – for both the baby’s well-being and the mother’s life. In the US, Black women with a college degree are five times more likely to die during or after childbirth than White women.
Four panelists addressed these topics in a virtual panel discussion that took place on August 18th, from 5 to 6:30 pm. Midwife and educator Ronnie Lichtman, PhD, served as moderator. Two panelists, Anneka Knutsson, Chief of Branch, Sexual and Reproductive Health, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Padmini Murthy, MD, MPH, NY Medical College, presented the global perspective, while Angela ampbell, Ed.D, Executive Director of the Lower Hudson Valley Perinatal Network, and midwife Nubia Martin, Facilitator of the Chocolate Milk Café in Yonkers, provided the local overview.
